Customer specific shipping
Your customers are special. Whether they’re VIP members, wholesale retailers, business partners, or recurring shoppers — you can tailor your shipping rates to match.
Creating customer accounts and adding customer tags in Shopify is beyond the scope of this document. For more information, please see the following links:
Make a rate for specific customers
In order to limit a rate to a specific kind of customer you will need to add a customer restriction.
- Start by creating a new rate or editing an existing rate
- Under your rate name and description you will see the Shipment Restrictions section
- In this section, click the blue “Add customer restriction” link
You will now be presented with a drop-down and text field to enter your tags. The drop-down tells us how to interpret the text you enter:
- Customer tag is - A customer must have one of the tags listed for this rate to be valid
- Customer tag is not - The rate will not show if the customer has any of the listed tags
- Customer tag starts with - If any customer tags begin with the text you enter, this rate will be valid
- With your customer tags in place, you may proceed by adding your shipping prices
- Scroll back to the top of this rate and click the [Save] button to commit your changes
Add shipping prices for specific customers
Rather than creating a specific rate for each customer, you can use Prices to add surcharges or discounts based on who’s checking out.
Setting this up is similar to creating a rate-wide customer restriction (described above), except the restriction is limited to a single Price.
Some scenarios you might use this in is:
Offering a discount for returning customers:
Free shipping for large B2B orders
Note: if you have other shipping prices in this rate, you can also set the amount to a large negative value to force free shipping.
